Abolitionism

Name given to the movement that marked the long process of abolition of slavery. According to some experts, the event represents a small revolution, resulting in the transformation of the slave order, which lasted about four hundred years. And this all over America. On the continent, the first signs can be seen in the 18th century in Haiti, and there was a real battle led by the captives. In Brazil, the issue has been present since Independence, when international recognition, especially by England, forced the end of trafficking. The debate, however, intensified in the 1840s, under pressure for the effective end of this vile trade, finally established in 1850. Thus began an extensive and gradual process of emancipation, which had several laws and intense popular participation. The organizations and practices that formed made the institution unsustainable, leading to its abolition in 1888, with the so-called Golden Law.
