The National Flag of Brazil, established on November 19, 1889, by Decree No. 4, after the Proclamation of the Republic. The states of the Federation are represented by stars.
It was designed by Raimundo Teixeira Mendes and Miguel Lemos, with drawing by Décio Vilares. Inspired by the ancient Empire Flag designed by the French painter Jean Baptiste Debret, the sky-blue sphere and the motto "Order and Progress" is in place of the Imperial Crown. Within the sphere, the sky of Rio de Janeiro is represented, with the constellation Cruzeiro do Sul, at 8:30 am on November 15, 1889, the day of the Proclamation of the Republic.
November 19 is celebrated as Flag Day. More information on Law No. 5,700.
Anthem to the Flag
Lyrics of Olavo Bilac (1865-1918)
Music of Francisco Braga (1868-1945)
First time presented on 9/11/1906
Hail, beautiful tassel of hope,
Save august symbol of peace.
Your noble presence in remembrance
The greatness of the Fatherland brings us.
Receive the ending affection
In our youthful chest
Dear symbol of the earth,
From the beloved land of Brazil!
In your beautiful bosom portraits
This sky of pure blue,
The unparalleled greenery of these woods
And the splendor of the Southern Cross.
Contemplating your holy figure
We understand our duty,
And Brazil for your beloved children,
Powerful and happy will be.
About the huge Brazilian nation
In times of celebration or pain,
Hover always, holy flag
Pavilion of justice and love.
