It is located in the southern region and is bordered by São Paulo to the north and northeast, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Santa Catarina to the south, Argentina to the southwest, Paraguay to the west and Mato Grosso do Sul to the northwest. It houses what is left of the Araucaria forest and its predominant climate is the humid subtropical.
Paraná has a highly diversified and highly productive agricultural sector, as well as a growing industrial sector. It is the largest state national producer of corn and the second largest in sugar cane and soy.
The rivers of the Paraná River Watershed drain almost all of the state. The main watercourses are, besides the Paraná River itself, Paranapanema, Iguaçu and Ivaí.
